Reflections: Day 1 NaNoWriMo
I promised myself not to write any words down until November 1st. I allowed myself to think about a story idea, formulate characters and scenarios, but nothing written.
Now that I've started writing, here are my thoughts:
I'm needing an equal amount of time researching information for the story as much as writing the story. Did not consider that. Rover stats, history, problems, locations on Mars are going to be refered to over and over.
Because I'm sharing what I write, it all needs to be in chronological order to keep reader's interest. If they are random scenes, no one knows where I want them in the story but me. Most writers have a scene appear in their mind and the write it down, regardless where it fits in the story. I can go back and add more parts later.
To hit 1,667 words a day, I have to focus on continuing the story along with a high level of stream of consciousness writing. Plenty of what I write could be shit, but it might help lead in the right direction or make sure I stay away from a direction.
I work ten hour days, doing treework. I'm tired as hell when I get home, so pushing on to write until bed time is not easy.
After the last month and a half of telling myself I have to do this and finally getting to write words down, the pressure isn't writing, it was waiting to write.
Goal now is to break the story into 30 parts. Resolution leads to cliffhanger in each one. They are their own chapters. Start, middle and end to each. Give the reader some info, fix some things then create a bigger problem. All the way to the end.
